Last June, near the end of the 2007-2008 school year, Owen J. Roberts School District principal Jim Melchore approached Terry Stouffer, the school’s Middle School Track coach and a Coventry Lion’s Club Member. Jim’s request was to expand the existing Middle School Leo Club by bringing a Lions Sponsored service club to the North Coventry Elementary School. This was the start of a new and fast growing idea for clubs in the School District.

After meeting with the Coventry Lions Club and receiving encouragement; Melchore and Lion Stouffer canvassed the elementary centers for interested advisors. In a very short period of time, all five elementary schools in the district had instituted a Lion’s Youth Club as a volunteer service organization at each school. Over 100 fourth through sixth graders make up this new club with each school having 17 – 27 members. One of the first orders of business for the schools was to nominate a new club name. After each school nominated up to three choices, the name “Lion Cubs” was adopted as the name for the new club. The five schools have already been involved with community service projects. Lion Cubs from North Coventry School had a “Reverse Trick or Treat” trip to Manatawny Manor, an assisted living residence for the elderly. Dressed in their Halloween Costumes, the Lion Cubs treated the residents by presenting them with hand made Halloween decorations and reading to them from their favorite Halloween book. |
All five elementary schools are involved with a food drive to aid in the Coventry Lions Club Food Baskets delivery to disadvantaged families. Food baskets were delivered at Thanksgiving and will have additional deliveries at Christmas and Easter. Other current projects include an eye glasses drive, stuffing stockings for needy children through the local Salvation Army and Christmas Tree Angels. A joint meeting with all five elementary Lion Cubs and the sponsoring Coventry Lions is being planned for the near future. The Coventry Lions believe this is new and important way of involving our community in the activities so important to our cause. |
